Is Distance Education Right for You?

Online learning offers flexibility, but it also requires preparation. Complete the readiness quiz and review the topics below before enrolling.
Advantages of Distance Education
  • Flexible scheduling for coursework.
  • Reduced travel time and transportation costs.
  • Ability to work from home, office, or another suitable learning environment.
  • Helpful for students who prefer written communication.
  • Can support meaningful online interaction when students participate actively.
Challenges of Distance Education
  • Less face-to-face interaction with classmates and instructors.
  • Requires self-discipline, motivation, and time management.
  • Students with limited technology skills may need additional preparation.
  • Online courses may take as much or more time than traditional courses.
  • Communication depends on technology, internet access, and response time.
Skills Needed for Online Learning
  • Basic word processing skills.
  • Ability to send and receive email attachments.
  • Ability to navigate websites and online course pages.
  • Time management and self-motivation.
  • Good written communication skills.
  • Willingness to ask for help when needed.

Technology Requirements

Review these technology recommendations before taking an online course through Moodle.

Device and Internet Access

Students should have access to a reliable computer or compatible device, stable internet, GCC email, Moodle, and online course materials. A desktop or laptop is strongly recommended for graded assignments, quizzes, and file uploads.

Browser Recommendations

Use a current version of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge. Older browsers may cause issues with Moodle or course materials.

Settings and Software
  • Enable cookies, pop-ups, JavaScript, and required browser permissions.
  • Use current PDF viewing software.
  • Have access to productivity software such as Microsoft Office or Google Docs.
  • Keep antivirus and security software updated.
Network and Environment Considerations

Home, workplace, or public networks may affect access to Moodle, videos, file uploads, and online tools. Test access before assignment deadlines whenever possible.
