YouthBuild Program Orientation-What am I getting myself into?
The YouthBuild Program will host an orientation week prior to the first day of classes for the YouthBuild Program. This is often referred to as “Mental Toughness.” Within this week-long event, participants will be introduced to the YouthBuild Program, Community Partners, Benefits, and Resources. In addition, participants will partake in a variety of leadership and team-building activities. Upon completion of the orientation, the selection of participants will take place.

Notice of Selection: Participants –Do I make the cut?
Participants who are considered “selected” are those who meet all requirements for admission into YouthBuild, have completed their initial intake with the program personnel, and have attended the YouthBuild Orientation –” Mental Toughness.” Upon receipt of the Welcome Letter, students will proceed with scheduling additional meetings for administrative needs with the program to finalize enrollment and registration into the first set of courses.

Program Design and Expectations–Why is the program structured this way?
The program is structured similarly to GCC’s Bootcamps where a semester’s worth of a course is taught at an accelerated schedule minimizing the training to a fraction of a regular four-month semester, which allows more time for additional training.

Benefits of GCCYB Participants–Why should I join, what is in it for me?
Aside from the Education and certifications students earn in YouthBuild, they have many other benefits. GCCYB students are considered GCC Students similar to Postsecondary and Adult High School students. They have access to many of the resources traditional GCC students do, such as student support, facilities, events and activities.

Fully-Funded Program–It’s free?
The GCCYB Program covers all the tuition, fees, supplies, and certifications. The only cost it is to you is your time and patience.

Stipends – I earn money for attending my classes?
The Department of Labor American Job Center provides our fully accepted YouthBuild program students with opportunities to receive stipends. There are administrative requirements on the American Job Center’s end that need to be completed for students to qualify for their stipend. They must complete the application and register on HIRE GUAM’s website. The stipends are based on hourly attendance in the courses of training.

Program Completion–What happens when I complete the Program?
GCCYB participants can avail of two (2) pathways after they have successfully completed their YouthBuild Program.

  1. Career Pathway – Throughout the program GCCYB’s Job Developer’s (Program Coordinator II) Role was to seek employers who are interested in hiring the participants. The Job Developer will work with the students to connect them with a job for employment after the program with one year of follow-up to ensure they are employed and to link them with additional resources if they are still trying to find employment.

  2. College Pathway – Courses taken under the YouthBuild Program are credited courses and are eligible to count towards postsecondary (college) education in the Construction Trades field. GCCYB’s team will link the participant with the academic counselor and advisors for advisement. The participant will be linked with postsecondary resources.
