Metallica Scholars Initiative to Fund Upcoming Ship Repair Boot Camp

Guam Community College (GCC) was awarded $75,000 in grant funding through Metallica Scholars Initiative (MSI). MSI is a collaboration between the iconic rock and roll band Metallica and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). The MSI funding will support GCC’s upcoming Ship Repair XIII Boot Camp kicking off in November 2024. Ship repair boot camps and marine construction trades are in high demand in Guam’s ship repair industry, which supports the U.S. Navy’s mission in the Pacific region. GCC is the first college in a United States territory to be awarded the scholarship.
Participants in the boot camp cycle will receive training in Introduction to Intro to Diesel Technology & Preventative Maintenance I, Paint Preparation, and Blue Print Reading. Additional training will include Heartsaver First Aid, CPR & AED, WorkKeys®, Work Ethic, and OSHA 10.
Boot camp employer sponsors are Cabras Marine Corporation, Guam Shipyard and Sea Fix. Participants who successfully complete this program will be offered job opportunities. This boot camp has 20 open spots. The first day of boot camp classes on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
Boot camp participants are required to attend an orientation on November 15 in the GCC Multipurpose Auditorium at 4 p.m.
Those interested will have to meet the following requirements:
- Must be 18+ years of age
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Must be Underemployed or Unemployed
- Must be able to work in the United States
- Must submit police and court clearances
